A medical oncologist has special training to diagnose and treat cancer in adults using chemotherapy, hormone therapy, biologic therapy, and targeted therapy. Often, an oncologist is the main health care provider for someone with cancer. A medical oncologist also provides supportive care and can coordinate treatment given by other specialists. Also called cancerologist and clinical oncologist.
