Tests of chemical levels in the blood can show how well certain organs are working, and in some cases can give insight into where cancer may be found in the body.

For example, liver function tests in a person with cancer of unknown primary may suggest that the cancer may be in the liver. The cancer may have started in the liver or may have spread to the liver from another part of the body. Other blood tests can show how well the kidneys are working and whether or not the cancer has invaded the bones.
